The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU), Amarkantak, was established through an Act of the Indian Parliament. It came into existence under the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act of 2007 and began operations in July 2008. The university’s jurisdiction spans the entire country, and it is fully funded by the Central Government via the University Grants Commission (UGC). This institution was created to fulfill the long-standing aspiration of the tribal communities for higher education. The tribal people possess a rich cultural heritage and exceptional artistic and craft skills; however, they have been marginalized in terms of access to higher education and various other aspects of life. In today’s globalized world, where technological advancements have made the world seem smaller, the tribes—who are true custodians of India’s cultural heritage—are still lagging behind in this fast-paced development.
